How to Commission a Painting

We all have special places in our hearts; a painting to celebrate a unique moment both provides us with a timeless reminder of the occasion and allows others to share in it. For instance, Golf courses are great places to test and stretch golfers abilities. They are places of great drama and fond memories. I have had the pleasure of a hole in one at a par 3 on Barton-on-Sea; a picture would help tell the story.

Suggested Occasions

There are a whole variety of occasions which might merit a record of a particular scene;

• a birth or a birthday
• an engagement or a marriage
• a gift for moving house
• an anniversary or a Christmas present
• a prize for an event or an achievement (like a hole in one !!)
• the start of a new business
• a personal biography
• a holiday memory or a favourite walk
• a retirement gift
• a memorial to a lost loved one

Commission Process

If you would like to commission a specific painting for an occasion then the process I would normally follow is;

• Interview- to identify the subject matter and any specific reasons / timing for the painting
• Research – gather photographs, etc. to include.
• Presentation of Proposal with Sketch Designs – my initial ideas for the painting for discussion
• Painting Commission in Artists Agreement – our agreement on sizes, orientation, timings, price etc.
• 10% advance payment
• Acceptance of final painting – absolutely certain that you are happy with the result
• Final Payment
• The Painting Conveyance – a letter from me conveying ownership to you the buyer
• Reproduction ideas – you may wish to copy the picture for a whole variety of people or have greetings cards printed from it.

Note; the process can sometimes take up to 1 month so we need to plan a little in advance.

Indication of commission fees (excluding copyright)

Between £0.60-1.00 per square centimetre of canvas without research (about £1.00 per square inch)

Between £0.90-1.30 per square centimetre of canvas with research depening on complexity and time (about £2–3 per square inch)

Note: Framing and travel beyond 30 mile radius of the studio would be charged as extra.
